Delta Lake via Lupine Meadows: Everything You Need to Know

I’ve done some unforgettable day hikes in the Tetons, but Delta Lake? It stole the show… and my heart (and quads). If you’re up for a challenge with massive payoff, this turquoise gem tucked beneath the Grand Teton is the kind of trail that sticks with you forever.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own hike to Delta Lake, along with some insider tips from my own adventure, plus a few stories, laughs, and ice-cold beers to go with it.

🚗 Getting There

  • Trailhead: Lupine Meadows Trailhead
    📍 Coordinates: 43.7353, -110.7412
  • Parking tip: We arrived at 8:30 AM on a Monday in late June and the lot was already about 70% full. Get there early, especially during peak season.

🥾 Hike Stats

  • Mileage: ~9 miles round trip
  • Elevation gain: ~2,500 feet
  • Trail app: AllTrails (Delta Lake via Lupine Meadows Access).
I used airplane mode to save battery, and the GPS still tracked my route flawlessly, super helpful for the rock scramble near the top.

🌼 What to Expect on the Trail

Most of the trail is a steady incline with a series of switchbacks winding through wildflowers and offering incredible views of the valley and multiple lakes below. You’ll feel like you’re earning the view without totally dying.

But the final stretch? That’s where things get wild.

The last ~0.5 miles includes:

  • Steep, slippery gravel
  • Rock scrambling over boulder fields
  • No real trail, just cairns and intuition
  • A definite heart-pounder (but a fun one!)

🪨 Tip: Go slow and test your footing. It’s not technically hard, but the terrain isn’t always stable. Not recommended for young kids or those with balance issues.

🎒 Bring:

  • Plenty of water (I carried 2.5L and it was plenty for me)
  • Trekking poles (lifesaver on the way down, just stash them for the scramble)
  • Good hiking shoes with solid grip
  • Snacks. A big lunch. And more snacks!
  • A willingness to laugh when you slip on your butt

🏞 Why It’s Worth It

Once you crest the final boulders and see that vibrant turquoise lake shimmering beneath the towering face of Grand Teton, everything else disappears. It’s raw, wild, peaceful, and absolutely surreal.

This is one of my new favorite places on Earth.

And if you’re feeling bold (or a little crazy), bring a swimsuit for a cold plunge. I forgot mine and regret it! Watching others jump in and scream-laugh their way through the shock was hilarious, and weirdly inspiring.

❤️ The Best Company

I got to share this adventure with Vance and his sister, Apis Mellifera, who had just performed at a local music fest the day before. It was such a joy to catch up, celebrate her performance, and then hit the trail together.

There’s something about hiking that brings out the best conversations, the kind that linger long after the trail ends. It’s one of the reasons I crave these kinds of adventures.

❄️ Bonus Pro-Tip: Nature’s Ice Bath

After finishing the hike, we soaked our tired legs in a chilly mountain stream crossing the trail. Ten minutes later, the aches were gone and the laughter was flowing again. Highly recommend. Nature’s anti-inflammatory at its finest.

⛺ Where We Camped

We camped about an hour south in Alpine, WY on BLM land just across from Melvin Brewing. It’s one of our go-to spots for a reason:

  • Free dispersed camping
  • Right on the Snake River
  • 360° mountain views
  • Peaceful, beautiful, and totally worth the short drive

There are a few firepits and even some picnic tables if you get lucky. But every spot there feels like a slice of paradise.

🍻 Post-Hike Recovery at Melvin Brewing

A couple minutes’ walk from camp, Melvin’s Brewery is one of my favorite breweries in the country. Not only is the beer next-level, but the food is amazing too.

I frequently order the Thai steak salad, perfectly cooked medium-rare steak over a refreshing salad with the most insanely delicious light dressing. It’s the kind of meal that makes you feel like you’re recovering and indulging at the same time.

Delta Lake demands some grit, but the reward is unforgettable. Between the lake, the people I shared it with, and the post-hike brews, it was the kind of adventure that leaves you sore, satisfied, and totally recharged.

If you’re up for the challenge, do it. 100% worth it!
